old message:

Edit: Moving this up again since history camp is here

Hello, If anyone is interested, Norvin and I were thinking of splitting the history essay planning so we all have more resources to refer to! Yipee!

The logic is - We have all kinds of notes to refer to, but few of them are organised in the form of essay plans (and some are organised in a very special way). Hence it might be nice to have something neater for our mutual reference.

The following is a list of topics and respective allocations. (just add your name beside it to volunteer and upload your part to the google group once you're done, hopefully before the start of Sept Holidays) If you already have something on a particular topic, such as your term assignment or any notes you've made earlier, just mark it out and upload onto the google group as well. (It's okay if the topic is already taken, the more the merrier)

  2. Collaboration and resistance: successes and limitations
C. Decolonisation (NOREEN)
  1. Factors affecting the decolonisation process
  2. Transfer of power or struggle for independence
  3. International circumstances
Theme 2: Challenges to independent Southeast Asian states

D. Political structures (EECHU)
  1. Different forms of governments
  2. Role of the military
  3. Role of the Communist parties
E. Economic Development (NOREEN)

  3. Role of different communities
F. Nation Building (NOREEN)

Dear Year twos

Even so few of you turned up for today's lecture (though some of you were responsible enough to message me), and many of you have not come for consultations, still I am duty bound to help all of you. We had the source based practice today on International law, a hot topic. I am attaching the source based answer scheme for all of you.
Here's wishing all those who are willing to cooperate and work hard the best for the As.

"I also want to clarify the COMPARISON element in your essays.

Mr Teh told me that you all had the impression that you must compare factors for EVERY PARAGRAPH.

Now I explicitly remembered mentioning during lectures and tutorials that this was not so but once again, many were not listening but were distracted.

So I am going to say this one more time. YOU DO NOT COMPARE EVERY SINGLE PARAGRAPH. RATHER YOU ONLY COMPARE THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR (YOUR STAND) WITH TWO LESS IMPORTANT FACTORS.

eg To what extent was the Cold War caused by Soviet policies?

So the given factor is "Soviet policies". Assuming that your MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IS THAT IT WAS USA POLICIES, then after writing the 2nd paragraph on "soviet policies", the next paragraph on American policies is where you start comparing

S- Issue showing that USA policies were the most important for origins of cold war
E- Evidence of USA policies
E- Link to question to show how USA policies caused Cold war
Then COMPARE TO SHOW HOW USA POLICIES WERE MORE IMPORTANT THAN USSR POLICIES.

So remember the golden rule, ALWAYS COMPARE THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR PARAGRAPHS WITH TWO LESS IMPORTANT FACTORS PARAGRAPHS. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO COMPARE EVERY PARAGRAPH.

Now I know that many of you still want to score higher for paper 2 at the expense of paper 1, and I must admit that paper 1 is less attractive and harder because it is contemporary history and very ISSUE DRIVEN.

But as I said in the lectures, if you abandon Paper 1 and get a miserly C or D for it, you will not get an overall A grade for History. So for goodness sake, put aside your personal preferences and do what is beneficial for yourselves.

Acknowledge this mail as always and tell your class mates about the comparison factor please."

prelims preparation

History reps
It has come to my attention that many students have decided to 'abandon' History paper 1 because of preoccupation with other subjects or due to other inexplicable reasons.
While I do understand the difficulties in coping with revision for so many subjects, yet it is my solemn duty to remind you that History is still after all, a combination of Paper 1 and Paper 2. Even if you were to do outstandingly well for paper 2, yet careless neglect of paper 1 can reduce an overall A grade to even a C (of God forbid, a D or less).
If you recall, I sent a list of history essays with comments to you not too long ago. Those essays were selected because they are helpful for your prelims.
I am sending another essay that may help you for your revision.
I cannot tell you which topics are going to be tested as this would defeat the purpose of preparing for A levels. But I can and have been giving you as much help as I can with regard to highlighting important topics and providing essays with comments. I expect you all to do your part and not simply abandon paper 1, a choice which one may live to regret if not corrected.
History reps please pass this mail and attachment to your classmates.

HINT: For UN, pay special attention to the last few topics presented by your classmates. Trust me, you need CK
For essays, for goodness sake do not ignore conflict and cooperation. Remember the global economy sub topic that I told you Cambridge will remove after your batch too.

tutorial questions for intl hist tutorial tmr

as you all know (i hope), we have to do 2 questions for tmr because of the lesson we missed due to NDP.

1. It was the arab countries' aggression that hindered the resolution of the arab-israeli conflict from 1948 to 2000. How far do you agree with this statement?

2. to what extent was the india-pakistan conflict due to british culpability?

so please do them to avoid any repercussions tmr, even though i know that will be a tall order.

p.s. i love alan.
p.p.s. i am not the history rep using someone else's account to spread rumours about their love interests.

LIT TEST!!

Yo all, there'll be a Paper 3 lit test next week (wk 8), 21st Aug, Friday during lecture - it'll be a Gatsby and LDJ comparison test and the question will be selected from the following (found in the LDJ revision lecture notes given 3 weeks ago):

Discuss the representation of conflict in the two texts.

Modern writing is preoccupied with the portrayl of terrible events. Discuss.

"The age of uncertainty." Discuss how two modern writers present this idea.

Compare the ways in which two modern writers make use of irony/place.

Disucss how the texts function as commentaries on human affairs.

Compare the ways in which two texts present characters as coping with the impact of change.

Compare the ways in which two texts by modern writers experiment with aspects of traditional genres.

"The defining characteristic of modern writing is in its presentation of uncertainty and doubt." How far have you found this to be true in any two modern texts that you have studied?

Compare the ways in which two texts by modern writers present the effects of place on character.

Compare the ways in which any two modern texts you have studied explore themes of universal significance through the presentation of individual experience.

How do two texts that you have studied experiment with style and form in their attempt to express the complexity of the modern world?

The Discipline Committee had conducted a check on the CT benches last Friday (07/08/09). There were some benches with used food wrappings, plastic cups, papers which are not properly weighted down, etc…. . There were also a few benches with quite a lot of litters below them. Below are the CT benches which had failed the check:

1) A10

2) A12

3) A13 <---- !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4) S61

5) S63

6) S65

7) S6A

8) S6C

9) S6G

10) S74

11) S7A

12) S7B

You are reminded to keep your CT benches clean and tidy at ALL TIMES. The Discipline Committee will be conducting another check on the CT benches soon. Classes that show no improvement on the maintenance of their CT benches after repeated warnings will have their benches moved to the area within the “curved all” outside the Auditorium.
