Chalet!

Hello all, suggested activities for our class chalet! Please feel free to edit the post and add your stuff. Anyways we decided to organize the chalet cos a ton of us are enlisting next week and you'll pretty much never see us again for the rest of your lives, so please please try to come. If (transport fees are ex / it takes too long / I have no money) is bothering you, then uh you probably won't be invited at gatherings 10 years down the road cos you'll have less money and time by then. Bing Yang you know you want to come!

1. Class Good Dinner
Ok alot of people were against the idea of a BBQ because it's ex plus there's ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS not enough food. So we need another meal to bring those people who only come for BBQs cos they don't want to stay the entire duration together. There's a ton of restaurants we can go to have a full and proper meal, at approximately the price you have to pay for the BBQ, so rest assured. (I suggest Seoul Garden =D)

Take note, the class dinner should be on >> Saturday Night <<>
2. (Over)Night Cycling Destinations include Changi Beach / Lau Pa Sat / I dunno where else, tentatively second night.(Saturday Night)

3. MOVIE(S) SCREENING?!
Uh someone bring a DVD player! Then Vietnam people bring their 314718057935 Vietnam DVDs to watch ok! Nick will be screening HK Dramas too.(Time: All the time)

4. Jia Sheng Visiting
Our dear Jia Sheng only books out on Sunday morning, so I think we should say hello to him at Pasir Ris interchange. And keep him on our minds by drinking his favourite drink.

5. Animal Befriending
Uh let's feed some cats or something. =(-^.^-)= Someone has a can of cat food.

nor: that would be me... -_- but ok! cos i haven't gotten round to feeding my neighbourhood cats yet

Other activities include: Bowling, beach >insert activity<, skating, cycling, LAN, shopping, sleeping, and niaoing Ee Chu.

PLEASE VOLUNTEER ON TAGBOARD: Game Consoles (Wii most preferred, especially with Rock Band set), DVD Player (Most are not heavy at all), DVDs. Feel free to enlist the help of those who are not bringing stuff!

KK AND MINJIAN BRING EXTRA MONEY TO RETURN ME! YUMENG BRING MY CARABINER! Sorry I always forget to ask for the stuff.

what time do we meet, where! and where's the chalet? we check in on friday afternoon and check out sunday morning right?

Money Matters

Hey all!

Remember the History Camp? Yeap, the notes which were the love child of our brillant camp has still not been paid for. The class fund has insufficient moolah to pay for the total cost, an amount which amounts to something substantial. Thus, can all the people who obtained notes from the history camp bring an amount of about 5 dollars (grossly overestimated, but just in case yeah?) for prom?

Thank you all!
Ee Chu (on behalf of Fabian, who is deprieved of technology at the very moment ):

LIT A Levels

Beloved Students,

Please find below a list of reminders and tips compiled by your Earnest tutor. Do tell your friends to read it too!

General Comments

“Poem Titles”, Novel Titles and Play Titles

Quote phrases / clauses NOT whole sentences or many lines

Food for Thought: Universality / timelessness of texts (why they are still popular / relevant today) à Cover issues that still remain pertinent!

Beloved: Discrimination – inclusion and exclusion / relative morality v.s. absolute laws / multiplicity and how each experience is equally valid / search for self / importance of community and/or family / to love and be loved etc.

TIOBE: Hypocrisy / Class concerns / Superficiality – style over substance / material pursuits and concerns / morality and propriety / gender etc.

When reading TIOBE, always remember that nothing is quite what it seems (refer to the question we went through during the last revision lect) à not just on the level of characters. Also how the play seems to be frivolous and light and abt nothing in particular but it raises various concerns. BUT even as a satire, it reinforces status quo at the end (have to be rich / have social standing to get married; males still take the lead (Prism being an exception as she is comic due to unexpectedness of what she does à initiating embrace enthusiastically))

Poetry Comparison: Getting the Paper

Read the qn carefully! Is there a hint of what the main topic / concern of the poems is? If so, that can guide your reading. If not, fret not! Just read on.

Look at the TITLE, it should give you a clue on what to expect (if it does not meet your expectations, it could be significant too!)

Reading the Poems

WHILE reading, annotate and annotate! Jot down any associations that come to mind! A poem, by nature of being so short, is rich in meaning! Why one image / word and not another? (Is it positive or negative? What is the degree (tap, push, shove) and how does it affect your understanding of the poem?)

Pay attention to ALL aspects of the poems! SPECS – SLIMS

Planning the Essay

What is the main topic? (Marriage, Love, Children, Death, Self etc.) HOW is the topic being presented? à The way in which the topic is presented will be the SUBJECT of the poems.

Draw out the WAYS in which a certain ASPECT is brought out in one poem then the other.

Writing the Essay

Intro: Includes the subject of the poems (main similarity); could also raise the main differences either in terms of presentation / style

Body Para: EITHER SPECS – SLIMS or thematic organisation is fine. Can be a mixture of both throughout your essay! Need not use SPECS – SLIMS in the exact same order. Feel free to begin with Movement etc.

CLEAR topic sentence that holds BOTH poems together by means of comparison – when you use SPECS – SLIMS, ensure that you move beyond mere OBSERVATION of which device is used – first person pov etc. to WHAT is the significance given the subject matter! [When in doubt, read the post-mortem of prelim poems (or any pair) where I’ve gone through sample TS with you]

In your para, then include how Poem A demos what you’ve listed in your TS and how Poem B does so.

To round off, you could comment on how it is different / which is more engaging / induces more sympathy in the reader etc,

à Generally look out for TENSION within and between poems!

Context Questions

Close reading is KEY! Annotate as you read!

Jot down the main themes brought up - if possible, split them into smaller sub-themes so that your para will not be too long and your essay will be focused

ORGANISE your points so that there is a sense of development / logical link between your points! Your essay should not read like a random list of points!

All paras should start with a TS on what is the main aspect you have drawn from the passage – cite evidence from the passage and engage with the words / images etc. Only after you have tied the point to the passage can you draw one or two more related episodes from the rest of the text.

Essays

ANALYSE the question carefully! When in doubt abt the meaning of a word / phrase, DO THE CONTEXT INSTEAD!!!

Intro: Address the prompt quote (if any) – who said it and in what context – how it is applicable to the rest of the novel / the presentation of a specific issue in the text

If it is just about a particular theme (w/o quote), show WHY the theme is important in the text as a whole and in relation to the context – either of slavery / Victorian era

Body Paras: Topic sentences should be clear!

As usual, there should be a sense of development rather than a list haphazardly thrown together.

Evidence should be CLEARLY explained and elaborated to demonstrate the point you are trying to make.

Conclusion: Try to draw the issue to larger concerns! Such as multiplicity etc.

All the best for your paper! Most importantly, enjoy it :) Good Luck!!

Love,
Ms Liew

old message:

Edit: Moving this up again since history camp is here

Hello, If anyone is interested, Norvin and I were thinking of splitting the history essay planning so we all have more resources to refer to! Yipee!

The logic is - We have all kinds of notes to refer to, but few of them are organised in the form of essay plans (and some are organised in a very special way). Hence it might be nice to have something neater for our mutual reference.

The following is a list of topics and respective allocations. (just add your name beside it to volunteer and upload your part to the google group once you're done, hopefully before the start of Sept Holidays) If you already have something on a particular topic, such as your term assignment or any notes you've made earlier, just mark it out and upload onto the google group as well. (It's okay if the topic is already taken, the more the merrier)

C. Decolonisation (NOREEN)
  1. Factors affecting the decolonisation process
  2. Transfer of power or struggle for independence
  3. International circumstances
Theme 2: Challenges to independent Southeast Asian states

D. Political structures (EECHU)
  1. Different forms of governments
  2. Role of the military
  3. Role of the Communist parties
E. Economic Development (NOREEN)

  2. Role of government
  3. Role of different communities
F. Nation Building (NOREEN)
  1. Different approaches to creating national unity
  2. Policies towards minorities
Theme 3: Regional conflicts and cooperation

G. Interstate Tensions

Dear Year twos

Even so few of you turned up for today's lecture (though some of you were responsible enough to message me), and many of you have not come for consultations, still I am duty bound to help all of you. We had the source based practice today on International law, a hot topic. I am attaching the source based answer scheme for all of you.
Here's wishing all those who are willing to cooperate and work hard the best for the As.

"I also want to clarify the COMPARISON element in your essays.

Mr Teh told me that you all had the impression that you must compare factors for EVERY PARAGRAPH.

Now I explicitly remembered mentioning during lectures and tutorials that this was not so but once again, many were not listening but were distracted.

So I am going to say this one more time. YOU DO NOT COMPARE EVERY SINGLE PARAGRAPH. RATHER YOU ONLY COMPARE THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR (YOUR STAND) WITH TWO LESS IMPORTANT FACTORS.

eg To what extent was the Cold War caused by Soviet policies?

So the given factor is "Soviet policies". Assuming that your MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IS THAT IT WAS USA POLICIES, then after writing the 2nd paragraph on "soviet policies", the next paragraph on American policies is where you start comparing

S- Issue showing that USA policies were the most important for origins of cold war
E- Evidence of USA policies
E- Link to question to show how USA policies caused Cold war
Then COMPARE TO SHOW HOW USA POLICIES WERE MORE IMPORTANT THAN USSR POLICIES.

So remember the golden rule, ALWAYS COMPARE THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR PARAGRAPHS WITH TWO LESS IMPORTANT FACTORS PARAGRAPHS. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO COMPARE EVERY PARAGRAPH.

Now I know that many of you still want to score higher for paper 2 at the expense of paper 1, and I must admit that paper 1 is less attractive and harder because it is contemporary history and very ISSUE DRIVEN.

But as I said in the lectures, if you abandon Paper 1 and get a miserly C or D for it, you will not get an overall A grade for History. So for goodness sake, put aside your personal preferences and do what is beneficial for yourselves.

Acknowledge this mail as always and tell your class mates about the comparison factor please."

prelims preparation

History reps
It has come to my attention that many students have decided to 'abandon' History paper 1 because of preoccupation with other subjects or due to other inexplicable reasons.
While I do understand the difficulties in coping with revision for so many subjects, yet it is my solemn duty to remind you that History is still after all, a combination of Paper 1 and Paper 2. Even if you were to do outstandingly well for paper 2, yet careless neglect of paper 1 can reduce an overall A grade to even a C (of God forbid, a D or less).
If you recall, I sent a list of history essays with comments to you not too long ago. Those essays were selected because they are helpful for your prelims.
I am sending another essay that may help you for your revision.
I cannot tell you which topics are going to be tested as this would defeat the purpose of preparing for A levels. But I can and have been giving you as much help as I can with regard to highlighting important topics and providing essays with comments. I expect you all to do your part and not simply abandon paper 1, a choice which one may live to regret if not corrected.
History reps please pass this mail and attachment to your classmates.

HINT: For UN, pay special attention to the last few topics presented by your classmates. Trust me, you need CK
For essays, for goodness sake do not ignore conflict and cooperation. Remember the global economy sub topic that I told you Cambridge will remove after your batch too.
